Welcome to SLAC The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) is a national basic research laboratory, probing the structure of matter at the atomic scale with x rays and at much smaller scales with electron and positron beams. The laboratory is operated by Stanford University under a contract from the United States Department of Energy (DOE). The combined staff is currently about 1300, 150 of whom are Ph.D. physicists. Typically 800 physicists from universities and laboratories around the world participate in the high energy physics program and 800 scientists from universities and industrial laboratories are active in the synchrotron radiation program.

“The Federation of American Scientists conducts analysis and advocacy on science, technology and public policy, including nuclear weapons, arms sales, biological hazards, secrecy, and space policy. FAS is a privately-funded non-profit policy organization whose Board of Sponsors includes half of America’s living Nobel Laureates.
FAS was founded as the Federation of Atomic Scientists in 1945 by members of the Manhattan Project who produced the first atomic bomb, to address the implications and dangers of the nuclear age. FAS is the oldest organization dedicated to ending the arms race and avoiding the use of nuclear weapons, and much of its work has been in nuclear arms control and disarmament. In addition, throughout its history FAS publications and projects have addressed a wide range of science and society issues, including those of population, energy, agriculture, medical care, and ethnic conflict (in countries such as Cambodia, Peru and Yugoslavia.)”

Gulfbusiness.com 1996

gulfbusiness.com 1996

One theme which emerges strongly from our survey of the region’s airports and airlines this month is a growing realisation of the importance of the private sector – whether it be in the sourcing of a new airport, or through direct privatisation in the case of an airline.
Both the experience of the United Kingdom in turning its state-dominated economy into a privately-driven success story, and the former communist world’s dash to embrace the private sector, have left many strategists in the Gulf wondering if this concept has a role in modernising state-controlled industries here.

In the Gulf, government-sponsored industry was a natural progression during the oil boom years. It is only now – when industry requires rationalisation, reorganisation, and fresh investment – that the private sector has to come to the fore. Yet there is a common misapprehension about privatisation in the Gulf.”
